Grandparents for Sale

by The Emerald Ruby

/

about

This is a protest song written about Kiama Council (attempting) to sell Blue Haven Care, its aged care facility and independent living units, without consulting the community or the residents to pay off debts unrelated to the running of the village. They're currently campaigning to get 10,000 signatures on a petition to stop the sale. You can sign here: www.change.org/p/save-blue-haven-kiama?redirect=false

My Parents live in these units. If allowed to sell the facility, despite existing contracts and agreements with the residents, this will be a continuation of the decline in aged care provision that was evidenced in the Aged Care Royal Commission.

They must be stopped - this is happening to families and vulnerable people under the cloak of ‘council business’. It is everyone’s business to ensure our elderly citizens are protected from this kind of abuse and deception.

I wrote, recorded, produced and filmed this emergency protest song in the space of a week to get the word out. I'm not a lawyer, I'm not a protest organiser, but I can do this.

lyrics

Lyrics:

A] When birds fly the nest
A house with a white picket fence all feels so empty
A call on the wind with a message for you
A haven of blue
To see your life through

B] All those suited men and their sleazy friends
Placed our grandfather up for sale
To settle all the debts
Made with dimes not theirs to spend
Where is the duty of care
Oh where is the duty of care

A] Contracts are signed
Promises scribble upon a black dotted line
A sweet little house in a haven so safe
What a perfect place
To see out your days

B] All those suited men
And their sleazy friends
Placed out grandmother up for sale
Promises a farce
Their contracts made of glass
Where is the duty of care
Where is the duty of care
Where is the duty of care
Where is the duty of care
